James is a Senior Fire & Security Engineer at ACL and has been with the company for 10 years.
James Charlton
Sector: Healthcare
Time with acl: 10 years
Background
After studying sport science and art at college James decided he would like to progress into an industry that was a little more hands-on. After speaking with another one of our engineers Tom Doyle, who was completing his apprenticeship with ACL at this time, James decided to join our team as well.
He began his journey as an apprentice studying electrical engineering and completed his course in just 3 years. James went on to be a fully-fledged Fire and Security Engineer and was promoted to Senior Engineer.
Life as an engineer
James is typically stationed at one of our healthcare sites in Paddington, where he has built close client relationships with both members of the trust and the facilities management company who directly look after the site. James is usually either commissioning Gent fire panels or programming new devices. Being a senior engineer means often working in a team with apprentices, ensuring our new apprentices are given the opportunity to lean from those who have expansive knowledge of the industry and a lot of experience behind them.
”"Being confident in the safety of such an important public structure like a hospital, leaving work knowing you've done something to help others is incredibly rewarding"
The best part of the job
With ACL the whole company feels like 1 team, no one is ever left alone on site. Help is always available to each and every team member. There is always someone on the end of the phone, whether it be your own manager or even a service co-ordinator from another team.
